So you want to be an illustrator

A friend recently told me that she was contemplating going to a private college that has an illustration program. It’s one of the local places that has a decent reputation, but still, it’s only 4 months! You can’t become an illustrator in 4 months. It got me thinking about all the free resources  that have been popping up in recent years. So for the benefit of everyone who wants to be an illustrator, here are a few new resources you should check out.

DIY Art School What can I say, you can’t have more targeted than that. It’s a blog started by my friend Joe Wilson and the aim is to advise aspiring artists to take their education in their own hands.

Awesome Horse Studio Free streaming demos, coupled with critiques and a chatroom, for that sense of community.

WIPNation More critiques and community. This is a tag based forum and also the site that supports the Awesome Horse and ArtOrder communities. They have tools specifically designed  for paintovers and many professional users.

Some oldies but goodies:

Conceptart.org yeah, sometimes it’s run over with noobs, but there are still highly knowledgeable artists around there.

TheArtOrder Jon Schindehette’s blog, now with guest writers. You need to go to the very first post and read everything from the start. It’s full of gems.

This very blog!  I know I’m tooting my own horn but I have written a lot about learning about art and business since 2007 so it’s worth it to go back and check out some old posts.

You know, I’ve been thinking about getting into drawing again. It’s been years since I put pencil to paper and doodled anything.

I’m definitely going to check out the sources you mentioned; it’s great how much free information is out there on the Internet, eh? Allows all of us to be self-made ________s (whatever we want).

    Thanks for sharing.🙂
